Govt says deposits above Rs 2 5 lakh to be taxed Your 4 questions answered

Govt says deposits above Rs 2 5 lakh to be taxed Your 4 questions answered

?“The tax amount plus a penalty of 200 per cent of the tax payable would be levied as per the Section 270(A) of the Income Tax Act.”

?In another late night announcement, the government warned that cash deposits above Rs 2.5 lakh during the 50-day window to return 1000 and 500 rupee notes could be taxed while a 200% penalty would be applied to deposits that don’t match declared incomes.

?“We will be getting reports of all cash deposited during the period of November 10 to December 30, 2016, above a threshold of Rs 2.5 lakh in every account. The (tax) department would do matching of this with income returns filed by the depositors.

?Cash deposits above Rs 2.5 lakh could attract tax and penalty and authorities might take away 90% of your money if there is an income mismatch, according to a government decision on Wednesday.

?The announcement came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a flutter by abolishing 1000 and 500 rupee banknotes in a move to flush out money hidden from the tax man. New 500 and 2000 rupee bills will replace about 86% of all currency in circulation by value.

?Hasmukh Adhia said small businessmen, housewives, artisans and workers who had some cash lying as their savings at home need not be worried about any tax department scrutiny.

?“Such group of people need not worry about deposits up to Rs 1.5 or 2 lakh since it would be below the taxable income. There will be no harassment by the Income Tax Department for such small deposits made,” he said.

?For people buying jewellery, he said the PAN number will need to be given.

?“We are issuing instructions to the field authorities to check with all the jewellers to ensure this requirement is not compromised. Action will be taken against those jewellers who fail to take PAN numbers from such buyers. When the cash deposits of the jewellers is scrutinised against the sales made, whether they have taken the PAN number of the buyer or not will also be checked,”

Revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia answers the four frequently asked questions:

1.A lot of small businessmen, housewives, artisans, workers may have some cash lying around as their savings at home. Will the income tax department ask questions if the same is deposited in banks?

Such group of people, as mentioned in the question, need not worry about such small amount of deposits up to Rs 1.5-2 lakh, since it would be below the taxable income. There will be no harassment by income tax department for such small deposits made.

2.Will the income tax department be getting reports of cash deposits made during this period? If so, will the current threshold of reporting requirement of reporting cash deposits of more than Rs 10 lakh will only continue?

We would be getting reports of all cash deposited during the period of November 10 to December 30 above a threshold of Rs 2.5 lakh in every account. The department would match this with income returns filled by the depositors. And suitable action may follow.

3.Suppose the department finds that huge amount of cash above Rs 10 lakh is deposited in a bank account, which is not matching with the income declared, what would be the tax and penalty to be paid on the same?

This would be treated as a case of tax evasion and the tax amount plus a penalty of 200% of the tax payable would be levied as per the section 270(A) of the income tax act.

4.It is believed that a lot of people are buying jewellery now. How does department plan to tackle this?

The person who buys jewellery has to give his PAN number. We are issuing instructions to the field authorities to check with all the jewellers to ensure that this requirement is not compromised. Action will be taken against those jewellers who fail to take PAN numbers from such buyers. When the cash deposits of the jewellers would be scrutinised against the sales made, whether they have taken the PAN number of the buyer or not will also be checked

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Says Petrol Diesel Cheaper If You Pay By Card 10 Points

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Says Petrol Diesel Cheaper If You Pay By Card 10 Points

NEW DELHI:  Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced a series of incentives on digital transactions, exactly a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi banned 500 and 1,000-rupee notes to unearth black or undeclared money. To encourage cashless transactions, the government has followed up a tax break on use of credit and debit cards announced earlier in the day, with a discount bonanza for people who make purchases digitally at central government run organisations and public sector units or PSUs.

Following are the top announcements made by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley:

1.Petrol and diesel will cost 0.75 per cent less if purchased using cards or e-wallets from state-run companies. "4.5 crore consumers buy petrol and diesel worth Rs. 1,800 crore daily and in one month, digital payments have doubled to 40 per cent," Mr Jaitley said.

2.The Finance Minister said central government run organisations and public sector units or PSUs will not charge transaction fees on digital payments.

3.He also announced discounts on insurance products purchased online - 10 percent on general insurance, eight per cent on life insurance.

4.Mr Jaitley said one lakh villages in India whose population is about 10,000 will be given two Point of Sale or swipe machines each to encourage digital transactions. The government is focused on addressing rural distress amid the cash crunch that has followed the notes ban.

5.Railways passengers have been encouraged to go cashless with a 0.5 per cent discount on monthly and seasonal tickets for suburban railway networks. The railways will also give a 5 per cent discount for services like catering and use of waiting rooms, if purchased digitally.

6.Railway passengers who make digital payments will also get an accident insurance cover of Rs. 10 lakh, the Finance Minister said.

7.People who pay digitally or use prepaid cards will get a 10 per cent discount at toll plazas on highways.

8.The governments aim, Mr Jaitley said, was to reduce the use of cash as the economy bears both "visible and invisible" transaction costs for these. "So we are using this opportunity to move towards digitisation," the minister said, adding that the cost for this would be borne by the central government and the PSUs participating.

9.On Thursday morning, the government had announced that people would not be charged service tax when they use their credit or debit card for up to Rs. 2,000. Currently, a 15% tax is imposed on these transactions.

10.In a series of tweets on Thursday, PM Modi thanked people for bearing with what he called "short term pain" which "will pave the way for long term gains" and asked young people to help make "India corruption free & ensure more cashless transactions." The Opposition wore black bands in Parliament to mark one month of the notes ban, which they allege has punished the poor rather than the corrupt.

Today, the Peoples Democratic Party is no longer in government so they should stop blaming the PDP. They told us that dollars would become one to one with the naira. But where is that today? The regime of fuel subsidy is gone and we now have food subsidy.

Now it is a true fact that electricity  has tune to once in two weeks and fuel has gone to high that the poor mass can hardly get one liter of fuel for cars .It is high time that Nigerians should know that we are in the wrong direction because you cannot give what you don’t have. That is to say that president Muhammad Buhari cannot give us that he promised us during the presidential election.
